What Are 440C Stainless Steel Deep Groove Ball Bearings?

Publish Time: 2026-08-14     Origin: Site

1、What are 440C stainless steel deep groove ball bearings?

Single-row deep groove ball bearing structure. The inner and outer rings as well as the balls are made of 440C high-carbon martensitic stainless steel, subjected to vacuum quenching and cryogenic treatment, achieving a stable hardness of HRC 58–62. It is the most common stainless steel bearing for replacing GCr15 bearing steel in humid conditions, combining load-carrying capacity and corrosion resistance. Common model designations: S6000 / S6200 / S6300 / S6800 / S6900 / SMR micro series (SS6000).

2、Structural configuration list

2.1.Seal type (key selection factor)

· Open type: No seal, convenient for relubrication; not recommended for dusty or humid environments.

· ZZ / 2Z – Steel shields (non‑contact): Suitable for dry, light dust conditions; temperature range –40°C to 150°C.

· 2RS / RS – Rubber contact seals (NBR): Suitable for wash‑down, moisture, light spray; best water and dust protection; long‑term use ≤110°C.

Optional fluoro rubber 2RS (FKM) for improved oil resistance and higher temperature tolerance.

2.2.Standard material configuration for components

· Inner rings, outer rings, and rolling elements: 440C stainless steel

· Shields and stamped cages: 304 stainless steel

· High‑end option: PEEK cages (for high speed, low friction, food‑grade / vacuum environments)

· Upgraded option: Hybrid ceramic type (440C rings + Si₃N₄ silicon nitride balls) – enables higher speeds, prevents galling, and reduces heat generation.

2.3.Precision & Clearance

· Precision grades: P0 (ABEC1) / P6 (ABEC3) / P5 (ABEC5)

· Standard clearance: C0 (normal); optional C3 larger clearance (for high-temperature and interference-fit applications).

3、Core performance advantages and disadvantages

Advantages:

①.Deep-groove raceways accommodate both radial loads and moderate bidirectional axial loads, offering exceptional versatility.

②.Hardness significantly higher than that of 304/316 stainless steel bearings, providing excellent load capacity, wear resistance, and fatigue performance.

③.Compared with GCr15 chrome steel, it offers superior moisture resistance and everyday corrosion protection; suitable for intermittent wash‑down environments.

④.Comprehensive size range: from micro MR series → 68/69 thin‑section series → 60/62/63 standard series, with flanged versions available.

⑤.Compatible with food‑grade greases and low‑outgassing vacuum lubricants.

Disadvantages (selection pitfalls to avoid)

①.Moderate corrosion resistance: not suitable for prolonged seawater immersion, high‑chloride salt spray, or strong acids/alkalis; long‑term marine service may lead to pitting corrosion.

②.Magnetic properties: cannot be used in MRI or non‑magnetic equipment requiring zero magnetism.

③.Continuous operating temperature should not exceed 150°C, as higher temperatures may cause tempering and reduce hardness.

④.Under excessive shock loads, the raceway is prone to cracking/fracture; toughness is inferior to that of GCr15 steel.

4、Typical application scenarios

①. Food processing equipment, cleaning production lines, packaging machinery (wash‑down conditions)

②.Medical devices, laboratory instruments, sterilization equipment

③.Water pumps, valves, small stainless steel motors

④.Fishing tackle, outdoor automation, equipment in spray environments

⑤.Semiconductor general vacuum chambers, optical inspection equipment

⑥.Conveyor rollers, small corrosion‑resistant transmission mechanisms

5、Unsuitable application scenarios

①.Continuous seawater immersion, marine underwater equipment (prefer ceramic bearings or 316L stainless steel solutions)

②.Strong acid/alkali chemical media

③.Long‑term high‑temperature environments exceeding 150°C

④.Applications requiring completely non‑magnetic conditions

7、Practical selection recommendations

①.For wash‑down or spray conditions, prioritize 2RS rubber seals and use water‑resistant grease; perform regular relubrication maintenance.

②.For high‑speed applications, prefer 440C hybrid ceramic ball bearings to reduce heat generation and prevent seizure.

③.When purchasing, confirm the process: vacuum quenching + cryogenic stabilization treatment is mandatory; ordinary air‑quenched 440C has uneven hardness and is more prone to corrosion.

④.In cases of relatively heavy salt spray where material substitution is not possible, additional passivation treatment can be applied to assist corrosion resistance.

⑤.For frequent start‑stop cycles or high shock loads, choose a larger size rating with a reduced dynamic load rating to accommodate the conditions.
